RALEIGH, N.C. -

Activate Good sponsored a community-wide day of service Wednesday in Raleigh to honor those lost on 9/11.

Coordinated by Activate Good and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, local businesses partnered with the public to honor those lost by bettering their community. Hundreds of volunteers poured into Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown to work on service projects ranging from packaging food for the needy to gathering school supplies.

"It really does speak to who we are. There's so many people that want to help in so many ways," said Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane.

Volunteers helped the Urban Ministries of Wake County bag up rice, vegetables and other food to give to families in need.

"They're single women. Independent. Working two jobs and trying to get them to school. Trying to provide lunch and nutrition for them every day," said volunteer April Lewis.

Other volunteers worked with the Helps Education Fund to package binders full of tools to help kids read.

Helps Education Fund found John Begeny said, "I'm feeling appreciation...appreciation for the volunteers, appreciation for teachers, appreciation for Activate Good for hosting such a thing."
