GREENVILLE, S.C. -

Greenville Police are organizing a run they’re calling “Take Back The Swamp Rabbit Trail.”

A five-mile run is scheduled for Thursday beginning at 6 a.m. in the parking lot of the Greenville Zoo.

The announcement from Police Chief Terri Wilfong was made on the GPD Facebook page.

Police say some of their officers will be in neon green shirts and some will participate in the run.

The “Take Back The Swamp Rabbit Trail” comes after a series of reported incidents along the trail which stretches through much of Greenville County.

A woman was roller skating on the popular Upstate trail between the YMCA and Cleveland Park one week ago in broad daylight.

A man was attacked and robbed on the trail between Cleveland Park and Falls Park in August days before a man’s body was found along West Blue Ridge Drive. He had been shot to death.

Two cyclists reported shots were fired at them on August 20 and there were more reports of gunfire six days later along the trail. Investigators found bullet holes on signs in that incident.

Chief Wilfong has put forward a proposal to increase security that includes hiring more police officers, adding ATVs to patrol the trail along with extra security cameras and non-official officers.
