SPARKcon wraps up its third night

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

It's a downtown Raleigh like you've never seen before. Bustling with street art, costumes, and creativity, the 8th annual SPARKcon event is celebrating one of its biggest years.

The day is packed with creative outlets like fire shows, fashion shows, circus sideshows, and do-it-yourself art projects.

SPARKcon is on its third night and performers said they're excited about its momentum.

Melissa Kammerer is a performer from Greensboro and said she's in it for "the thrill of performing, making people happy, making them cringe." She said her specialty is with needles and one of her stunts involves lying on a bed filled with them.

Michael Rountree is also a performer. "I've been spinning fire for years," said Rountree. He said it's all in good fun and believes the best part of SPARKcon is when people want to learn the tricks he's practiced long and hard to perform.

The streets of downtown Raleigh were covered in sidewalk chalk for most of the day, showcasing the artistic talents of the Triangle. It was a big hit.

Temperance Tobe is a visitor and said, "I see a lot of creativity. I see a lot of self-expression. I see a lot of freedom in terms of what people are choosing to wear."

Richard Desautels handles security at SPARKcon and said, "Do I look like someone who takes life too seriously? No." He came dressed as a bunny tonight, and said he prefers to be called, "Lord War Bunny". Desautels said, "It's life! Have fun with it."

SPARKcon continues tomorrow starting at 9 in the morning. It's the last day of the event and is free and open to the public.
