A wreck in Anderson County has taken the life of a firefighter from the city of Seneca and injured another man.

The wreck happened just after 6 p.m. on Highway 24 at the Double Bridges when a mobile home moving truck went off the road and crashed into Lake Hartwell.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said that 49-year-old David Ray Wright, of Seneca, died after the truck blew a tire, crossed the center line over the double bridges and went over the guardrail and into the lake. Shore said that Wright, who was also the Chief of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department in Oconee County, was trapped in the truck's cab and had to be rescued. Rescue crews performed CPR on him as he was transported by ambulance to AnMed Health Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead at 7 pm.

"His dad owns a rental furniture business and he was helping him by driving the truck," Shore said. "It was just a tragic accident."

"It is with great sadness to announce the death of Friendship Volunteer Fire Chief David Wright," said Oconee County Fire Chief David King.  "David was killed in a traffic accident on Highway 24 this afternoon in Anderson.  David was driving a truck as part of his father's business when the wreck occurred. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. David has been a member of the fire service in Oconee County for more than 35 years.  He was currently serving as the volunteer chief of Friendship and a career Captain with the Seneca Fire Department. He was nearing his 24th anniversary with Seneca.  Oconee County lost a great man this evening.  Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and those left to carry on."

A passenger in the truck, 31-year-old Ismael Rodriquez, also of Seneca, managed to escape from the truck. he was transported to AnMed with non-life threatening injuries, Shore said.

Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson told 7 On Your Side that HazMat crews were notified after the truck spilled fuel into the lake. Dive teams from Anderson and Oconee counties used specialized diving suits to get to the truck. Just after 10 p.m. crews remove the cab from the water and were working to remove the trailer from the water as well.

Highway 24 re-opened overnight.

A viewing has been scheduled for Wednesday at Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home at 5 p.m.  The funeral will take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hepsibah Baptist Church.
