Sheriff's Offices Warn Of Sweepstakes Call Scam

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, N.C. - The Rutherford and Polk County Sheriff's Offices received a number of complaints about people calling pretending to work for Publisher's Clearing House.

Deputies say the callers will ask residents to go to a store and get a Green Dot card to transfer money to ship the prize.

The caller asks for a call back for the number of those cards.

Deputies warn that the caller can withdraw money on that card and those wire transfers are untraceable.

Darren Cronin lives in Polk County and said he got one of the calls on his personal cell phone.

He said the caller told him about a $2.5 million dollar prize, but when he got into the money to pay for the shipment, Cronin knew something was wrong.

"We have a huge elderly population and they are the main targets for people doing this kind of stuff, it's too good to be true and that should be your first clue," Cronin said.

Deputies also remind you that you can't win a contest you didn't enter.
