A healthcare facility in Mauldin reported that it may have suffered a breach of patient information.

NHC Healthcare at 850 East Butler Road in Mauldin reported in a statement to patients that they may have suffered a breach of information due to a missing backup tape that was not encrypted. The company states in the letter that information on the tape included patient names, social security numbers, birth dates, home addresses and medical information.

The facility stated that they have initiated an investigation into the incident and security measures have been revised to prevent future incidents.

"While we believe there is low risk of this information being used inappropriately, we understand any concern regarding possible unauthorized use of personal information", stated Deborah Dobson, Administrator. "We encourage you to monitor your credit reports for any signs of unauthorized activity."

Dobson tells 7 On Your Side, the information is now stored remotely, backed up at an off-site location. Officials believe this step will prevent any future incidents.

The company is asking anyone who has questions about the incident to contact them at 1-888-568-8578. Representatives are asking that anyone contacting the number to please reference that you are calling about the breach of information.

Dozens of people gathered Saturday afternoon to rally against the state's "Stand Your Ground," law, saying it amounts to "legal lynching." The group, Moms Demand Action, said the South Carolina law, first passed in 2006, causes gun violence and is exploited as a defense.
