COLUMBIA, S.C. -

Gov. Nikki Haley says opening day for enrolling in health insurance through the federally run online marketplace is a mess.

The Republican governor has actively opposed the federal health care law. But Haley says her office is trying to help people calling in with questions and their problems with signing up.

Haley says while she fought the Affordable Care Act, it is the law, and she wants to provide people the information they need.

The state's Medicaid agency has ramped up two call centers to handle residents' questions.

South Carolina is among the 36 states that chose not to run its own exchange, leaving that responsibility to the federal government.

While the exchange went live Tuesday, the uninsured have until March 31 to avoid a penalty.
