National Parks Shutdown In SC Including Cowpens Battlefield

A small sign sits at the entrance of Cowpens Battlefield. It says due to the government shutdown all National Parks are closed.

"It's just aggravating coming all the way from Forest City to walk my dog and to get here and see the park is closed," Todd Baker said.

Baker visits the park 3 to 4 times a week, and he's not alone.

Fran Mainella is the former Director of the National Parks Service.

Mainella tells us more than 715 thousand people visit national parks every day.

"This is an economic engine being shut down," Mainella said.

Mainella says its costing the country more than $450,000 in revenue everyday, and more than 20 thousand park employees are out of work.

"There are people who have planned vacations, weddings and all kinds of events and are not able to have those take place because the parks are closed," Mainella said.

Mainella says if you live near a National Park your entire community will feel the impact.

"All of a sudden the hotels and other properties around serving those areas will be negatively impacted restaurants, people that normally rent hiking equipment," Mainella said.

The parks can not re-open until the Government Shutdown comes to an end.

7 On Your Side Investigations uncovered new documents that detail a “politically sensitive” proposal for overhauling the Greenville County EMS system. The plan would change the way ambulances respond in a 9-1-1 emergency and would give control of the life-saving service to the county's largest hospital chain, Greenville Health System.
