A mother who lost her 6-year-old daughter in the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings last December visited in Raleigh Friday to share her story.

Nelba Marquez-Greene's daughter, Ana, died in the tragedy Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn.

Marquez-Greene said that since the tragedy, she has focused her efforts on her surviving son who was also in the school at the time, and on her nonprofit, the Sandy Hook Promise, which is dedicated to mental health issues and lobbying legislators on what she calls "middle ground" gun laws.

"The reality is no one wants to put their children on a bus send them to school and not get them back, so the middle ground starts with safety for Americans," she said.

Marquez-Greene was a mental health care provider before Ana's death, and said she continues to lobby for compassionate care for people with mental illness.

Ana Marquez-Greene was one of 26 people to die in the shootings at the school.
