BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. -

Boiling Springs High School was on temporary lockdown after a mom saw what she thought was a handgun being racked by a teen sitting in a car.

Spartanburg deputies say 17 year old Daniel McAbee has been arrested for possession of a weapon (CO2 pellet pistol) on campus and disturbing school. He is being charged as an adult.

A school resource officer says a mother and her teenage son pulled up in front of the school so mom could go inside and drop something off for her other son who is a student at the high school. They say another parent pulled up in front of the school and saw McAbee, who was wearing a black hoodie, sitting in a car. The parent said
McAbee pulled out a BB gun pistol and started to rack the slide.

Deputies say the woman saw this and drove away and called 911 to report what she saw. Deputies arrived at the scene and quickly located the teen. While searching the car the teen was in, deputies say they found the hoodie, a ski mask and a gun, which turned out to be a bb gun inside.

McAbee was placed under arrest and transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center. At a bond hearing Tuesday night, a magistrate court judge set McAbee's bond at $2,000. However, due to a prior criminal charge, McAbee must have a hearing Wednesday to determine whether his bond will be revoked. If he is released, he must abide by house arrest and electronic monitoring restrictions placed upon him.

On Tuesday, October 8th, while on my regular duties as School Resource Officer at Boiling Springs High School in Spartanburg County I was summoned to the main office by the school Principal, Chuck Gordon. He informed me that a parent had called the school and stated she had stopped by the school to drop off lunch for her student. When she returned to her vehicle, he daughter stated she had seen a man sitting in the car behind them take a gun out and "cock" it and he was wearing a black jacket. When the mom looked back the man in the car put the hood over his head. The parent left the school but called back to inform the school of the situation. The parent is the complainant, NAME REDACTED and her daughter, NAME REDACTED is the witness. They also notified 911 dispatch of the events and patrol units were sent to the high school. At this point the school was placed under lockdown and multiple patrol and investigative units arrived on scene to search for the suspect.

Mrs. Christian stated that the male was sitting in a dark colored vehicle in front of the school. When I arrived outside I noticed a dark blue vehicle parked along the curb in front of the school. School Principal Chuck Gordon approached the male in the vehicle and asked his purpose for being on campus.

He stated he rode with his mother to bring his brother an inhaler. As more patrol units arrived on scene the complainant and witness also returned to the school and identified the blue vehicle as the one containing the male with the hoodie and gun. At this point Lt. Chris Leso and myself approached the vehicle and asked the male to exit the car. At this point I recognized the male as Daniel McAbee, a former Boiling Springs student. I returned to the building and spoke with his mother, Melissa Queen to give her a heads up of the situation and asked her permission to search the vehicle since she was the driver. She agreed and consented to a search of the vehicle. Upon looking in the back passenger seat of the car I retrieved a black zip up hoodie. When I picked up the black hoodie a black, full faced ski mask was hidden underneath. I went around the the back drivers side seat and looked under the seat. There I saw what looked like a black semi automatic hand gun. Upon inspection of the gun it was determined to be an air soft pistol. I recovered the gun, the hoodie and the ski mask.

We took Daniel into the principals office to make sure he was secured . He stated he didn't think it was illegal to have black hoodie or ski mask and that he didn't know the air soft gun was in the car. He was not very cooperative with Investigator Clark who was speaking with him.

Investigator Clark has had numerous dealing with Daniel in the past and called Judge Ashmore in reference to the events that had taken place today at Boiling Springs High School. Judge Ashmore agreed to sign warrants for Disturbing

School and Having a Weapon on School Grounds. Daniel was placed under arrest.

When Investigator Clark told Daniel he was under arrest he became quite belligerent and began cursing. It was at this point we decided to have Daniel removed from the school grounds.

Daniel McAbee was transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center by Deputy Jake Law.

I-56 responded to take pictures of the gun, the hoodie and the ski mask. The gun the hoodie and the ski mask were taken into evidence by I-56,

Deputy Schaffer.

Below is a statement sent via School Messenger from BSH Principle Chuck Gordon

"Parents,

I want to inform you of an incident that put our school on lockdown today. First, let me assure you that your student is safe. Following a tip from a caller alerting us that someone was spotted on campus with what appeared to be a weapon, the school was immediately put on lockdown. A former student was located in a car in the parking lot and has been arrested for possession of a CO2 pellet pistol. He was in the car waiting for his mother, who was in the school. We appreciate the cooperation we received from all students on campus and the quick response of school staff and law enforcement in getting the situation taken care of quickly. The safety of our students is always our first priority."

7 On Your Side Investigations uncovered new documents that detail a “politically sensitive” proposal for overhauling the Greenville County EMS system. The plan would change the way ambulances respond in a 9-1-1 emergency and would give control of the life-saving service to the county's largest hospital chain, Greenville Health System.
