Crews work to cleanup chemical spill in Henderson Co. plant
HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. -
At approximately 3:50 AM Thursday Henderson County emergency responders were called to a hazardous materials spill involving hydrochloric acid.
The incident happened at the Continental Teves plant off of N.C. 280 between Mills River and Fletcher.
Emergency teams say approximately 4500 gallons of 33% hydrochloric acid had leaked into a safety holding area but was contained. Around 7:15 a.m. media were notified that the plant was inspected by a regional hazardous materials team and operations were being scaled back.Emergency responders say all safety procedures in place were fully effective.
Approximately 80 employees were evacuated from the building and emergency personnel are on the scene as cleanup procedures begin.
All surrounding businesses are open with no further evacuation plans anticipated at this time.
The plant will be closed for several hours as the cleanup continues.
