Man Charged With Stealing, Wrecking Asheville Police Car

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -

Asheville police have charged a 24 year old man with a stealing and wrecking a patrol car.  Benjamin Alexander Cator of Asheville has been arrested and taken into custody. 

Sergeant Dave Romick of the Asheville Police Department said that an officer parked his vehicle at the Skyland substation at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. The officer went inside the building and left the car unlocked with the key in the ignition. While he was inside, an unidentified man stole the car.  The police officer was suspended.

Cator faces the following charges:

Larceny of motor vehicle

Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official

Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official inflicting injury

Attempted common law robbery

Larceny of a firearm

Possession of a firearm by a felon

Speeding to elude arrest

Hit and run

Driving while license is revoked

Resisting, disrupting, or obstructing an officer 

Cator remains at the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $76,000 bond.
