Transylvania County, NC -

It took search and rescue crews nearly 24 hours to find a man who fell off of a waterfall while hiking in Transylvania County on Sunday.

Chief Bobby Cooper of the Lake Toxaway Fire & Rescue said that search and rescue crews found the body of a 46-year-old man from Asheville around 3:30 p.m. Monday between the rocks and water below an area adjacent to the Big Falls on the Thompson River in the Pisgah National Forest. Cooper said that the man fell from the area around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and rescue crews were dispatched to the area around 10 p.m. Sunday.

They searched for the man until early Monday morning. Rescue crews returned to the area later in the morning and continued the search until the body was discovered.

Cooper said that they attempted to reach the man's body, but the rugged terrain and lack of daylight prevented them from recovering it Monday.

They were eventually able to recover the body Tuesday using a helicopter.

Dozens of drivers have filed complaints with the South Carolina Department of Transportation over loose gravel along a stretch of I-85. Officials said the complaints, which topped out at between 6 and 8 per day last week, stem from gravel that's damaged vehicles between Highway 14 and 129, where crews are working on a two-year-long resurfacing project.
