Mother enters plea in death of Fayetteville girl

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The mother of a 5-year-old Fayetteville girl who police say was sold to pay a $200 debt has been sentenced to at least 17 years behind bars after entering a plea in court.

Antoinette Nicole Davis entered an Alford plea Friday in Cumberland County Superior Court to several charges, including second-degree murder.  An Alford plea doesn't admit guilt, but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction.

Shaniya Davis was reported missing Nov. 10, 2009. Her body was found six days later near the Lee-Harnett county line. An autopsy determined that she had been sexually assaulted before she was suffocated.

Mario Andrette McNeill was sentenced to death in May, when he was convicted of kidnapping and assaulting Shaniya before killing her.
