Phil 'fills in' as a barista and a gorilla man at Aversboro Coffee

Posted: Updated:
GARNER, N.C. -

Garner is known by many as the home of American Idol winner Scotty McCreery, but it's also known to have one of the best local coffee shops in the Triangle.

For our latest "Phil Fills In," Phil took a trip to Aversboro Coffee. The assignment? Barista. Or so he thought.

Phil walked in and met with shop owner Josh Macon. Macon had something different in mind for Phil.

"We have a gorilla suit for you to get into," he said.

A gorilla suit? Yes, a gorilla suit.

"Well, you know, we try to wave customers in with this every now and then," Macon said. "We used to have a coffee cup but we kind of phased that out and phased in the gorilla suit."

Before Phil went outside in his gorilla suit, Macon gave him the chance to find out what it was like to work behind the counter.

Phil's first customer ordered "an extra medium, hot Aversboro mocha, sugar free, decaf, half-skim, with whip cream around the top."

Clearly, Phil was more suited for the suit.

The goal while wearing the suit was to help bring in one customer, just one.

A gorilla man waving at cars to come drink coffee wasn't working, so Phil decided to try coaxing pedestrians into the shop and was able to find one.

When all was said and done, Phil got to try the coffee himself.

"Fantastic," he said.
