BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -

7 On Your Side is following up on the challenge to the state law banning same-sex marriage.

The head of the Register of Deeds, Drew Reisinger, says his office has accepted 21 applications. He says he will continue to hold them until a formal response is made by the Attorney General.

Drew said he does not count the statement sent to him as a formal response.

This is the statement:

"The State Constitution says that these marriage licenses cannot be issued and this is the law unless the Constitution is changed or the court says otherwise.  This very issue is the subject of pending litigation against the State of North Carolina."

The deeds office says it will continue to accept and hold new applications for licenses until that formal response comes from Attorney General.
