GREENVILLE, S.C. -

The Upstate's most popular giraffe celebrated his first birthday.

The Greenville Zoo says Kiko, the male Masai giraffe, turned one-year-old Tuesday. To celebrate, the zoo hosted a party. The event featured special zookeeper talks at the Giraffe Exhibit. Children who dressed in giraffe costumes also received free admission when accompanied by an adult paying the full-price admission.

The first 300 people to show up for the big party received free cake and Pepsi products. Kiko also got a special birthday treat, made of Ry-Krisp crackers, banana paste and hay.

More than 1.5 million people watched the live birth of Kiko of the zoo's GiraffeCam.

"Kiko's birth introduced a whole new audience for the zoo and has really had an effect on the way that we communicate and engage all of our guests," said Greenville Zoo Director Jeff Bullock. "It has been a tremendous year watching him grow and has only excited the staff as to the potential impact of the several other cooperative breeding programs we are now cultivating."

Kiko's parents are on loan to the Greenville Zoo as part of a breeding program. As part of the agreement, Kiko belongs to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. The second calf the pair produces will be given to the San Diego Zoo, and the third calf will stay in Greenville.
