The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Saturday, Oct. 19. Wofford quarterback Michael Weimer was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Chattanooga’s Wes Dothard was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week. Appalachian State running back Marcus Cox earned the league’s Freshman of the Week honor, while Furman kicker Ray Early was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michael Weimer, Wofford, So., QB, Chapin, S.C.
Wofford quarterback Michael Weimer came off the bench and rallied the Terriers to a 21-17 win over Western Carolina Saturday. With the Catamounts holding a 17-7 halftime advantage, Weimer scored on an 83-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to pull the Terriers to within three (17-14). He then engineered a nine-play drive that covered 79 yards in the fourth quarter to push Wofford ahead, 21-17. The sophomore finished the day with 15 carries for 132 yards on the ground and completed 2-of-5 passes for 28 yards in the win.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wes Dothard, Chattanooga, Sr., LB, Carrollton, Ga.
Chattanooga linebacker Wes Dothard led all players with a game-high 13 tackles in UTC’s 20-9 win at Elon. Dothard’s 13 stops was a season high, as he anchored a defense that has not given up a touchdown in its last two games. A Buchanan Award Watch List nominee, Dothard was credited with a tackle for loss and a pass break-up in the win. The senior leads the Mocs with 7.1 tackles per game.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Marcus Cox, Appalachian State, RB, Dacula, Ga.
Running back Marcus Cox accounted for 162 all-purpose yards in Appalachian State’s 27-10 loss at Furman. Cox rushed 21 times for 118 yards and averaged 5.6 yards per carry. It was his second 100-yard rushing performance this season. The Dacula, Ga., native also caught six passes for 44 yards. He ranks second in the Southern Conference with 156.1 all-purpose yards per game. It is the third time this season Cox has earned the Freshman of the Week honor.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ray Early, Furman, Sr., PK/P, Darlington, S.C.
Senior kicker Ray Early played a key role in Furman’s win over Appalachian State. Early averaged 47.4 yards on five punts and place four inside the Appalachian State 20-yard line. He averaged a perfect 65.0 yards on six kickoffs, five of which resulted in touchbacks. Additionally, Early went 2-of-3 in field goal attempts, including a 50-yard boot in the first quarter. It was the second consecutive week he converted a 50-yard attempt.
