An Easley man is a new record holder for shooting the heaviest bear ever in South Carolina.
Heath Smith, 25, shot the black bear that weighed in at 609 pounds near Landrum. Heath says this is the first bear he has shot.
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers say the bear officially breaks the previous state record of 594 pounds.
The animal had a 70 inch girth, and broke actually broke the winch as they loaded it onto the scale.
Smith says it’s going to cost a lot to get the bear stuffed. Probably thousands of dollars. Plus, because it’s so heavy, it won’t fit on a black bear mount. He has to get one made for a grizzly bear.Related:
