Did Affordable Care Act Cancel South Carolina Field Trips?

An annual field trip to "Barrier Island" near Charleston was canceled after a Greenville County school told parents they weren't comfortable with the facilities lack of a resident nurse.

"I am very disappointed," said Jennifer Dixon, a 5th grade teacher at Woodland Elementary.  "Because of the nurse not being available at Barrier Island, we will not be able to go," Dixon said.

On Monday, the school sent a letter to parents saying "we were just recently informed of the relinquishing of an integral staff member at Barrier Island as a result of the implementation and policies of the National Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act."

Read the entire letter here.

The letter follows one from the Executive Director at Barrier Island which told teachers the facility eliminated the nurse position because of the health care law.

7 On Your Side tried to reach  Bob Lawrence, the executive director by phone.  His staff said he was out of the country and was the only person at Barrier Island who could explain exactly why the Affordable Care Act would mean they could not retain a resident nurse.
