The Spartanburg County Coroner's office has identified the Spartanburg High School student who was hit by a vehicle Thursday night.

Erica Adrianna Fields, 17, died at 10:26 pm at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after she was hit while trick or treating. The accident happened at the intersection of Beechwood Drive and Sydnor Drive.

Police say Fields was with a group of others trick or treating, when they tried to cross the road to meet a family member for a ride home.

Officers say Fields was wearing a dark costume with no reflective gear. The Spartanburg Public Safety Departments says this is the first pedestrian death in the city involving a vehicle this year.

The Spartanburg Police Department says the driver was not at fault and will not be charged.

Spartanburg School District 7 released the following statement about Erica Fields:

Erica was a vibrant, beautiful young lady who touched all she came in contact with.  Her smile and zest for life will always be remembered. The administration, faculty, staff and students of Spartanburg High School and School District 7 would like to ask everyone in the community to pray for Erica’s family and her friends.

Spartanburg High School Principal Jeff Stevens added, "We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our students and staff are all very close, so this is very painful to all of us. We are committed to doing everything we can to assist the family.”

The school district said they had counselors available to help students and staff.
