NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -

Police officers are responding to a report of a possible gunman at Central Connecticut State University.

University spokesman Mark McLaughlin says somebody was seen "either with a gun or was thought to have a gun."

Jordan Governale, a 20-year-old junior from Farmington, says he saw a man carrying a backpack and a sword and sheath strapped to his back. He says the man was wearing a mask, camouflage pants, knee pads and a vest resembling body armor.

The campus in New Britain is locked down. Students are being urged to remain indoors and away from windows.

More than 12,000 students attend the university, which has a 182-acre campus.

Lt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, says university police asked for assistance related to a report of a suspicious person.

7 On Your Side Investigations uncovered new documents that detail a “politically sensitive” proposal for overhauling the Greenville County EMS system. The plan would change the way ambulances respond in a 9-1-1 emergency and would give control of the life-saving service to the county's largest hospital chain, Greenville Health System.
