Furman’s 16-14 road win over Georgia Southern on Saturday netted the Paladins a pair of Southern Conference honors as defensive end Ira McCune was named the league’s defensive player of the week and placekicker/punter Ray Early was accorded special teams player of the week, the conference office announced Monday morning.
McCune, a 6-foot-2, 251-pound junior from Marietta, Ga., notched six tackles and two fumble recoveries in the victory. His first recovery halted a Georgia Southern scoring threat at the Furman 26-yard line, and his second recovery at the GSU 45 with 5:06 remaining in the game allowed the Paladins to run out the clock and preserve the decision.
Early’s 18-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter proved to be the game winning points. The senior from Darlington, S.C., also averaged 51.0 yards on four punts, including a 59-yard effort in the first half, and put all four kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
Early, who was named SoCon Freshman of the Week following the Paladins’ 27-10 win over Appalachian State on Oct. 19, has now converted 11 of his last 12 field goal attempts.
Winners of its last two SoCon games, Furman entertains Samford this Saturday at Paladin Stadium in a 1:30 p.m. contest that will highlight Homecoming.
