RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina transportation officials are apologizing after several false and inappropriate traffic alert messages went out over the state’s Traveler Information Management System.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says an IT contractor was performing tests on the system and forgot to turn off the feed that goes to the public.

The contractor was immediately fired.

DOT officials are assuring citizens that these were not official messages and will take additional steps to prevent this type of incident from happening again.
