SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

In one week, at least four major companies made huge job announcements for the Upstate.

Amazon, BorgWarner Inc., Lear Corporation and ZR Transmissions all announced they plan to collectively hire at least 650 workers in the Upstate for everything from manufacturing to logistics.

SC Works in the city of Greenville has seen a steady increase in job postings over the past two months, going beyond seasonal jobs.

It’s welcome news for job seekers like Jessica Sithalath.

"It's been really frustrating looking every day, but I'm hopeful," she said.

Furman University Assistant Professor of Economics Jason Jones said it's about time.

“It's not surprising to see an uptick in jobs. It's taken a long time since the end of the recession, so it's good to see it happening," said Jones.

He said there are plenty of reasons you should care about this uptick in job openings even if you're not looking for work.

Any new job has the potential for what's called a multiplier effect. According to a 2012 University of California, Berkeley study, for each new manufacturing job in a given city,1.6 jobs are created in that same city.

Jones said the person who gets that job will also spend money at local businesses. If they buy houses, they strengthen the housing market, which could help your own home value rise. Plus they'll contribute to the local tax base.

Sithalath said she hopes this new wave of openings bodes well for her own job prospects.

“[I’m] tremendously hopeful. You know, this is a huge struggle,” she said. “I didn't expect to be laid off. So the fact that there are more jobs out there is awesome. "

South Carolina's September unemployment rate still has not been released. The numbers have been delayed because of the government shutdown. The most recent unemployment rate from the SC Department of Employment and Workforce is from August: 8.1 percent. It's remained steady between 8.0 percent and 8.1 percent since April.
