A fire that ripped through an apartment complex building Wednesday night has left a dozen people without a place to live and one woman with serious injuries.

Fire officials said the blaze started in one of the units at the Huntington Square Apartments shortly after six o'clock and quickly spread throughout the entire 8-unit building.

Alma Carballo was home cooking dinner when the fire started in her neighbor's apartment. "Somebody came to knock on my door and asked me to get out of my apartment because the apartment was on fire, and the next thing I see is fire all over the window."

Luckily, Carballo and her five-year-old daughter got out safely, but not everyone was that fortunate. A woman who was inside the apartment where the fire started is hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns, officials at the Joseph M. Mill Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., said Thursday. Her name has not yet been released.

The American Red Cross is assisting the families who have been displaced. The organization is paying for the families to stay in a hotel and for groceries while they decide where to go next.

Fire officials said Thursday three of the units are destroyed and the other five have extensive smoke damage.

The apartment complex did not want to comment.
