Woodruff, S.C. -

City of Woodruff Police Chief Darrel Dawkins is being demoted.

According to a news release from the city, an evaluation of Dawkins determined he failed to meet administrative expectations of the job.

Dawkins will be demoted to Sergeant.

The evaluation revealed several inconsistencies that “could have a detrimental impact on the health, welfare and safety of the citizens of Woodruff if they continue to go unaddressed.”

Dawkins was place on administrative leave in October.

Lt. Michael Gabriel will act as interim Police Chief until a permanent chief is hired.

City Manager Stephanie Monroe Tillerson stated in the release her gratitude to Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright for allowing Lt. Gabriel to work for the city.

Tillerson also said Dawkins is a fine person, and will serve as the Crime Prevention Officer effective Monday.

The search for a permanent chief is already underway.

Dozens of drivers have filed complaints with the South Carolina Department of Transportation over loose gravel along a stretch of I-85. Officials said the complaints, which topped out at between 6 and 8 per day last week, stem from gravel that's damaged vehicles between Highway 14 and 129, where crews are working on a two-year-long resurfacing project.
