SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Earlier this month, a family found a three-month-old hound-mix on the side of the road. It had been run over, its leg was broken and it was malnourished.

Spartanburg Humane Society veterinarians said the puppy, which is now in a full-leg cast, needs costly surgery to repair its two leg fractures.

"We have some donations that are coming in," said Kara Thompson of the Spartanburg Humane Society. "Any donations that don't specifically go towards Lilly go towards the Guardian Angel Fund."

The Humane Society has launched an online campaign to spread the word about little Lilly. It's hoping to raise the likely several thousand dollars it will cost for the surgery. So far, dozens of people have either called or come by the shelter in person to donate.

"I told my husband I want to give some money to this little doggy," said Judy Towery of Lyman, who dropped off $100 check Monday morning.

Kara Thompson, an adoption specialist at the humane society, said Lilly will be ready to go home with someone once she recovers from surgery. She said Lilly will make a great pet, especially for families. "She is going to be full of personality," she said. "I think she's going to be wonderful with children."

If you think Lilly might be a good fit for your home, call the Spartanburg Humane Society at 864-583-4805.
