RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards will once again practice law, opening a firm Tuesday morning with his daughter and former law partner.

Edwards' former law partner, David Kirby, said he, Edwards and Cate Edwards will open a law firm Tuesday morning in Raleigh.

The Edwards Kirby law firm will have offices in Raleigh and Washington, D.C.

John Edwards rose to prominence as a personal injury and malpractice attorney before entering state and national politics. He was reinstated with the North Carolina State Bar in October of last year, which allows him to practice or give legal advice to friends, officials with the bar say.

Cate Edwards graduated from Harvard Law in 2009, before joining a civil rights law firm in Washington, D.C.

Kirby was most recently a senior partner for the Kirby & Holt law firm in Raleigh. Kirby opened the firm in 1993 with John Edwards as Edwards & Kirby, LLP.

Edwards' political career derailed after the National Enquirer reported on his affair with Rielle Hunter.

A year and a half later, Edwards admitted he fathered a child with Hunter. Soon after, Edwards' wife, Elizabeth Edwards, announced she was seeking a separation from her husband.

In 2011, Edwards was indicted by a North Carolina grand jury on six felony charges, including four counts of collecting illegal campaign contributions. The indictment came after the U.S. Department of Justice conducted a two-year investigation in whether Edwards used more than $1 million in political donations to hide his affair.

After being acquitted of the charges in 2012, on the courthouse steps in Greensboro, Edwards apologized for his indiscretions, acknowledged the support of his family and his love for his children, including the child he had with Hunter.

Elizabeth Edwards died after a long battle with cancer in 2010, and is buried in Raleigh.
