FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

The Federal Aviation Administration says a Learjet has gone down in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast on its way to Cozumel, Mexico.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email that the Mexico-registered Learjet 35 went down about 8 p.m., 4 miles off the coast. She said the flight had departed Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and was headed to Cozumel, an island off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

She said it wasn't immediately known how many people were on board. CBS Miami reported that two people were dead as a result of the crash.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that it sent two boats and a helicopter to the area.
