CLINTON, S.C. -

Heavy smoke quickly filled the Laurens County skyline, putting a complete stop to work at Carolina Shavings, a mill that processes wood chips and pellets.

Mill worker say they evacuated quickly Wednesday afternoon as 13 fire departments responded to Shady Grove Church Road.

Police Chief Robin Morse says high winds and a lack of nearby fire hydrants put crews at a disadvantage earlier in the day. But as the winds died down crews removed brunt metal and shuffled through wood chip piles.

“There's a lot of piles of wood chips in there and they are burning,” said Chief Robin Morse with Clinton Public Safety. “So we got to get in there and get those scattered around."

With the flames now gone Chief Morse says they can now figure out what started the fire.

“They seem to think it was a piece of machinery that threw a spark into the wood chips,” said Morse. “And of course this place has a lot of saw dust. That stuff can be very flammable. And once it got going they couldn't get it stopped."

Chief Morse tells 7 On Your Side fire departments have responded to at least half a dozen fires at Carolina Shavings. He says they were similar to Wednesday’s fire, but they were easier to extinguish.
