Carolina Shavings' Conveyer Belt Possible Cause Of Clinton Fire

CLINTON, S.C. -

Crews are clearing debris at the site of a fire that destroyed a mill that processes wood chips and pellets in Clinton.

Public Safety Director Robin Morse says they're hoping to get a better look inside Carolina Shavings Thursday.

A fire started Wednesday around noon at the location off Shady Grove Church Road.

According to Morse, a conveyer belt malfunction may be to blame for the fire and not an industrial dryer as investigators first thought. Morse said the dryers have safety mechanisms that would have prevented a malfunction.

Investigators are continuing to interview employees and witnesses. Early indications are that the fire will be ruled an accident.
