SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

An Amtrak train derailed in Spartanburg County early Monday morning stranding more than 200 passengers for hours. Passengers and crew stuck on the train that left the tracks near Cedar Crest Road and Falling Creek Road, have all be rescued by emergency personnel.

Officials say it happened shortly after midnight when seven of the nine cars of Train 20, the Amtrak Crescent, lost contact with the track and went into the gravel. Amtrak says the cars did not tip over. The tracks have been closed as crews work to clear the cars that were traveling from New Orleans to New York.

According to Captain Derrick Miller with the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department there were injuries among the 207 passengers and 11 crew members. Amtrak says none of injuries were serious.  The hospital says all patients involved were released Monday morning.

Power, heat and restrooms were restored soon after the derailment.

Charter buses were sent from Charlotte to pick up the passengers and take them to Washington D.C. and Charlotte where they will be transferred to another train.

All passengers were removed from the train around 9:30 a.m.  Everyone is expected to arrive in New York late Monday night.

Amtrak released the following statement concerning refunds.

"Amtrak makes every effort to minimize inconvenience to our passengers during a service disruption," Kimberly Woods, Amtrak Media Relations Manager explained.  "Decisions on how best to accommodate our passengers in the event of a disruption are influenced by many factors and are made on a case-by-case basis."

Amtrak officials say this accident will not impact any other Amtrak trains.

Amtrak and the owners of the track, Norfolk Southern, are investigating the derailment.

A Norfolk Southern spokesman said the track was damaged in the incident and there was no timetable for when repairs would be complete.

According to numbers from the Federal Railroad Administration show that in the first half of 2013 there have been 873 derailments nationwide. Amtrak is responsible for 20 of those.
