Furman linebacker Cory Magwood has been named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Paladins’ 27-14, SoCon title clinching victory over Wofford on Saturday, the league announced today.
Magwood, a 6-foot-1, 216-pound sophomore from Varnville, S.C., headlined a Furman defensive effort with a game high 16 tackles, including a tackle for-loss, that helped key the Paladins to their fifth consecutive SoCon win and league record 13th championship.
After falling behind 14-0 in the second quarter, Furman responded by scoring 27 unanswered points against Wofford, helped along by a Paladin defensive unit that shut out the Terriers over the game’s final 35 minutes.
Magwood, who has battled injuries this year, has seen action in eight of Furman’s 12 games this year and registered five starts. His 79 tackles rank fifth on the squad, and his 18 stops against Gardner-Webb in the season opener represented a record for a Paladin in his first career start.
Furman will play at South Carolina State in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) first round playoff action this Saturday. Kickoff at Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPN3.
Tickets are $20 for adults. South Carolina State will offer free admission to children under 32” in height. Tickets may be purchased through the Furman ticket office, located in Timmons Arena, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The winner of the Furman-South Carolina State contest will play at No. 1 seed and two-time defending national champion North Dakota State on Dec. 7 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
