ASHEVILLE, N.C. -

A former South Carolina trooper has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for robbing a North Carolina bank.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that a judge also ordered Robert Owens of Simpsonville, S.C., to pay $50,000 to Macon Bank in Hendersonville and $23,000 to an insurance company.

Owens pleaded guilty last year to robbing the bank at gunpoint on Feb. 8, 2012.

He asked the judge at his sentencing for mercy, saying he's ashamed of what he did.

His attorney Fredilyn Sison says Owens had a mental breakdown before the robbery. He was at Charter Hospital in Greer, S.C., when he was arrested six days after the robbery.

Prosecutors say Owens used the stolen money to buy a loaded Chevrolet Camaro worth $54,000.
