GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -

A Greenville County dog is recovering after being dragged behind a truck and left for dead.

Greenville County Animal Control officers need your help to track down the abuser.

It happened in Marietta near the intersection of Geer Highway and Wildwood Road.

Animal Control took a call from someone saying they saw the dog being dragged behind an older white Ford farm truck in that area. But investigators have no license plate number, no driver description and no surveillance footage.

The dog was rushed to Upstate Veterinary Specialists in Greenville on Friday.

Dr. Brandon Adley was there when the 1-year-old pit bull first came in, wrapped in bloody blankets.

“Heartbreaking, to say the least,” said Adley.

Her feet, knees and mammaries were raw. Her ribs are clearly visible under her fur; she’s malnourished.

“She’s got all the reasons to be mad and be upset with people when they approach her, be fearful of people. She’s not. She’s been very sweet through all of this,” said Adley.

Now they call her Andra Grace.

Just days after her ordeal, she’s walking.

“It’s amazing. It’s a testament to her spirit, and her strength, and her will,” said Cynthia Saracino, a volunteer for Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, or SNARR, which is paying for the dog’s care.

Animal cruelty like this is on the rise is Greenville County.

“Unfortunately, it happens more often than people realize,” said Adley.

Last year, Greenville County Animal Control handled 958 animal cruelty cases. So far this year, there have been 1,000.

While many of those animals don’t find happy endings, Andra Grace is on her way.

SNARR has gotten offers from across the country to take her in.

“She’s going to find an amazing home and someone that’s deserving of her and that will appreciate her. And this will never happen to her again,” said Saracino.

Before she can go to a loving home, Adley said she’s got another four to six weeks of recovery ahead of her. He said it’s unclear whether all her wounds will heal completely, but she’s making great progress.

On Wednesday, she had another minor surgery to clean up her wounds, which went well.  It will be about a week before they can close up her major injuries, but she's healing more every day, rescuers say.

Investigators are asking for your help in this case. If you know someone with an older white Ford farm truck in Marietta who may have had a pit bull puppy, call Greenville County Animal Control. The number is 864-467-7595.

Several animal cruelty bills were introduced this year in the South Carolina state legislature. House Bill 3045 would create an animal abuser registry and require the sheriff's office to notify everyone within half a mile of the abuser. Senate Bill 193 would increase penalties for animal cruelty, particularly for first time offenders.
