ECU, other state colleges evaluating security on campus

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - ECU is joining other UNC system schools to evaluate security on campus and develop ways to make kids in college safer.

Administrators from across the state met in Raleigh this week to discuss potential improvements.

There are more than 80 emergency phones spread out around ECU's main campus. It's just one thing ECU already has in place to deter crime.

ECU police records show reported violent crime on campus has remained low during the past three years, even as the population has grown to be more than 27,000 students.

"We have victims services that works on campus, as well as off campus, and we also have an on-campus crime prevention officer who works closely with the GPD," says Lt. Amy Davis of the ECU Police Department.

But ECU administrators say they're always looking for ways to make campus safer.

That's why they participated in the first ever UNC system campus safety initiative public forum earlier this week in Raleigh. The idea came about following a string of robberies at N.C. State, shootings at N.C. Central and rapes at UNC-Chapel Hill.

At the forum, parents, students, and faculty from across the state made suggestions: from more parent engagement, to better educating students about alcohol abuse, to lowering crime in areas both on and off campus.

“Each campus has its own unique needs, and problems and solutions that they've tried and so I think it was nice to share best practices, talk about some ways that we as a system can kind of approach some of these issues together," said Travis Lewis, Associate Dean of Students.

Lewis says the goal of the panel is to eventually develop UNC system-wide strategies to fight crime.

"My concern is about transparency and making sure that students feel that they can come to administrators, and make us aware of concerns, know that we're going to take them seriously, we're going to investigate them, that our victims are going to come first," Lewis says.
