1.3 Million Long-Term Unemployed Losing Benefits

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - The federal government's 5-year program extending unemployment benefits, will run out on Saturday. It impacts 1.3 million Americans who have been without a job for more than 26 weeks.

The Emergency Unemployment Compensation program was created in 2008 to help people who exhausted regular state benefits. South Carolina provides a maximum of 20 weeks for state unemployment benefits.

The Senate is working on a bill that would restore the benefits for at least 3 months. That bill won't be brought up until lawmakers return to work after the new year.
