Need a jump start on funding your savings account?

Start with putting the breaks on overpaying for car insurance.

Online Auto Insurance compared quotes from 20 companies that insure South Carolina drivers and found the average gap is $750 dollars a year.

"Makes me want to go and look into changing possibly," said Spartanburg driver Amy Wilson.

Online Auto Insurance says the study is independent of any particular company, and based on a 34-year-old single male driver with a good driving history.

Jessie West is 31 and says:

"In the last 10 years I haven't had a speeding ticket, maybe I had a bump up, but other than that, my driving record's perfect."

He says his yearly insurance rate with Nationwide is $1260. The study shows that company's average quote for drivers like him in Spartanburg County is $691.

His reaction: "I'm getting ripped off, don't like it at all."

Pollinations says in most Upstate Counties the company with the cheapest rates of all is American National Property and Casualty, with an average annual rate of $474.

The study finds the most expensive is Hartford Accident & Indemnity at $1126.

Check out this spreadsheet of five local counties which shows average prices from 20 car insurance companies according to the study.

Obviously your rate depends on your driving record, your age, your type of car and other factors, but the study hits home just how different the price formulas can be for each company and how much it pays to compare.

I'd like to do some digging and see if I could save some money," said West.

Look for yourself and you may be switch gears, too.
