SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Wofford College) – On Saturday night, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 78-63 by Davidson at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Wildcats had a 13-0 run early in the first half and had a nine-point lead at the break. Davidson pushed the lead to as many as 21 in the second half to secure the conference win.

Wofford is 6-8 on the season and 1-1 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is 5-10 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Terriers were led by Lee Skinner with 22 point and nine rebounds. Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year De’Mon Brooks led Davidson with a career-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. 

“They outplayed us in every facet of the game and outcoached us,” said head coach Mike Young. “De’Mon Brooks was terrific and we could not do anything with him. We did not have the level of toughness, awareness and determination that we have come to expect.”

The Terriers opened the scoring with a lay-up by Spencer Collins, but the Wildcats scored the next four points. Buckets by Lee Skinner, Spencer Collins and C.J. Neumann gave Wofford an 8-4 lead after four minutes of play. Davidson regained the lead at 10-8 with 14:17 on the clock. The Wildcats run went to 13-0 before Lee Skinner had a lay-up at the 11:09 mark to make it a 17-10 score.

A jumper by Spencer Collins cut the lead to 21-13 at the 8:25 mark. Lee Skinner had a lay-up for a 23-15 score a minute later. The teams traded a pair of free throws and Davidson had a 27-17 lead before Spencer Collins hit a bucket and free throw for a 27-20 score with 4:40 left in the half. Davidson pushed the lead to 35-23 with less than two minutes on the clock before Eric Garcia hit a three pointer for a 35-26 score. Lee Skinner hit a jumper at the buzzer for a 37-28 score at the break.

Lee Skinner began the second half with a lay-up to cut the lead to 37-30 before the Wildcats answered with four straight points. After a Davidson three pointer, Spencer Collins hit a three pointer from the corner to make it a 44-35 game with 17:32 on the clock. The Wildcats scored the next nine points to push the advantage to 53-35 with 14:37 on the clock. A dunk by Justin Gordon and a bucket by Lee Skinner made it a 55-39 game. Wofford scored six straight points to cut the lead to 57-45 with eleven minutes left in the half.

After a jumper by Karl Cochran made it 59-47, Davidson answered with a 7-0 run to take a 66-47 lead with 8:49 remaining in the half. Lee Skinner ended the run with a free throw before the Wildcats took a 70-50 lead. Two free throws by Eric Garcia cut it to 73-54 with 5:41 left in the game. A bucket by Lee Skinner and a pair from the line by Indiana Faithfull made it a 75-58 game with 2:55 remaining. Davidson hit a three pointer with 1:34 left and Justin Gordon answered with a lay-up for a 78-60 score at the one minute mark. A dunk by Justin Gordon made it 78-62 and one final free throw by Lee Skinner with nine seconds remaining resulted in the final score of 78-63.

Wofford shot 41.8% from the floor. Davidson shot 61.2% overall, a season-high for a Wofford opponent. The Terriers were 2-of-8 from with three, while the Wildcats were 4-of-10 from behind the arc. Davidson was 14-of-17 from the line while Wofford was 15-of-21 on free throws. Davidson had a 32 to 23 lead in rebounds. 

The Terriers will host The Citadel on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
