Department of Transportation crews in western North Carolina were ready when snow began to fall around 4:00 a.m. Monday.

The NCDOT reports snow was spotted before sunrise in Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Rutherford and Yancey counties.

Salt and sand is being spread in the area as crew work to clear primary roads.

NCDOT crews are spreading salt in Graham, Swain, Jackson and Haywood counties.

They will work overnight to clear ice and snow, as needed.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division, the National Weather Service, the Red Cross and state public safety officials will be holding a news conference at noon to discuss this week's severe winter weather, which will begin to affect South Carolina later Monday.
