Man Found Dead After Leaving Homeless Shelter

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Cherokee County Coroner's Office is investigating the death of a man found in a field across from a homeless shelter Tuesday morning.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said that the body of 58-year-old Hank Duane Reynolds, of Chesnee, was discovered just before 8 a.m. by a cab driver in an open area off of Henderson Street, just behind the Piedmont Natural Gas building. Fowler said that his investigation has indicated Reynolds was brought to the Harbor of Hope shelter around 5:30 p.m. p.m. Monday after being discharged from Novant Health Gaffney Medical Center. According to Fowler, Reynolds told attendants that he did not have heat in his home which prompted them to find a place for him to stay.

Harvest of Hope officials said that Reynolds was logged into the shelter and ate dinner at the facility. After he finished his meal, he was seen in the lobby of the building by staff members and surveillance video last showed him at 7:25 pm.

"My investigation indicates Reynolds could have been sick when he left and just walked across the road and lay down in the field," said Fowler. "I have scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday morning to assist in my determining if he died from a medical condition prior to hypothermia caused by single digit temperatures."
