Statesboro, GA -

Wofford head football coach Mike Ayers will not be taking the same position at Georgia Southern, Wofford Athletic Director Richard Johnson confirmed to 7 On Your Side Thursday afternoon.

Ayers interviewed for the opening Wednesday. WTOC-TV in Savannah, Georgia, reports that Sam Houston State's Willie Fritz will take the job.

Ayers is Wofford's winningest all-time head coach with 178 victories. He has been the head coach of the Terriers since 1988. During the 2013 season, the team ended with a 5-6 overall record.

Ayers has received several awards including The Sports Network’s 2003 Eddie Robinson Award as Division I-AA’s National Coach of the Year, the SoCon Coach of the Year five times in the last 10 seasons, and the AFCA regional honor four times.
