CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The city of Charlotte has reached a settlement with the family of a Stanly County man shot and killed by police while he worked to repair a cellphone tower.

The Charlotte Observer reports that City Council approved the $700,000 deal during a closed session Jan. 6.

Forty-one-year-old Anthony Wayne Furr was working on a tower at around 1 a.m. July 20, 2006, when someone called police to report a suspicious vehicle.

Three officers responded. Police said Furr pulled out a gun and did not obey commands to put it down. An officer fired three times, hitting Furr twice in the chest.

Officers said they thought someone might have broken into the tower.
