Belton Man Arrested After High Speed Chase In Cherokee County

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man after two-county chase Tuesday morning.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller stated that Michael Bryan Hayes, 43, of Belton, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence- third offense, driving under suspension - second offense, failure to stop for a blue light, failure to surrender a driver's license, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, resisting arrest.

According to an incident report obtained from the sheriff's office, a deputy was on patrol when he was told that York County deputies were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle on Highway 5 headed into Cherokee County. York County deputies stopped their pursuit of the vehicle as it entered Cherokee County, but the deputy spotted the vehicle and attempted to pull the car over. However, the driver of the car, identified as Hayes, did not stop and sped away, nearly hitting several other cars.

According to the report, Hayes crossed over Highway 25 and continued on Highway 5 until the deputy lost sight of the car. The deputy the spotted the vehicle again at the intersection of Highway 5 and Phelps Road after the car had crashed into a guardrail. The report states that Hayes had jumped out of the vehicle and fled into a wooded area where he was located and quickly apprehended.

The deputy stated in the report that Hayes had a strong odor of alcohol coming from him and said he needed medical attention. After checking on Hayes' status, it was determined he had a warrant out for vehicle theft in Wisconsin and Georgia and a family court bench warrant from Abbeville. 

Hayes was placed into custody and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he is currently being held.
