SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

Spartanburg Water crews repaired a water main break Wednesday. The break happened near Andre Court off Powell Mill Road sometime Tuesday.

Some people living in the area experienced low water pressure or no water service at all. Wednesday, crews worked on the line underneath Highway 29 near the intersection with Powell Mill Road.

One lane of traffic, headed into downtown Spartanburg was still shut down Wednesday night.

Spartanburg Water officials tell 7 On Your Side, the winter weather and changing temperatures don't make it easy on the aging pipes.

Robert Walden, Director of Distribution and Collection for Spartanburg Water, says the pipe in the break near Powell Mill Road, the cast iron pipe was installed 60-70 years ago.

"We do have aging infrastructure issues that we are dealing with and we are replacing pipes as quickly as possible," Walden said.

Walden says they prioritize the replacement of the pipes based on which ones cause the most problems as far as maintenance or water quality  is concerned. He says because so many of the pipes run under the roads the cost of the replacement is much higher.

"That's a major part of the cost in any rehab or restructure is the replacement of the streets and roadways."
