Mother arrested for death of children after attempted exorcism

Posted: Updated:

Police say Zakieya L. Avery, 28, of Maryland stabbed two of her children to death and wounded the other two while attempting an exorcism.

She's charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, Montgomery County Police said in a statement.

A second woman, hospitalized after the incident, also faces charges in connection with the two deaths. No word yet on whether or not she's related to the family.

Norell Harris, 1, and his sister, Zyana Harris, 2, were stabbed to death and their siblings, ages 5 and 8, were hospitalized with injuries, authorities said.

The children were found January 17 after a neighbor called 911 to report suspicious activity at the home.  A call was reportedly made to police the night before for an unattended child in a car. When they arrived, the child was not in the car and no one came to the door, authorities said.

Exorcism is believed by some to get rid of evil spirits or demons.
