ANDERSON, S.C. - Members of the Anderson County Fire Protection Commission met for more than two hours Tuesday night in its search for a new fire chief.

According to our news coverage partners at the Anderson Independent-Mail, the meeting centered around Starr Volunteer Fire Chief Gary Shaw, who was suspended on January 10 for allowing firefighters to portray Santa while riding on the back of the truck during a town Christmas parade. The commission said that the fire chief and firefighters violated county police since they are required to ride in the cab.

Captain Russ Hawkins, who portrayed Santa, and the Shaw's son, Reese, were also suspended.

According to the Independent-Mail, a crowd of more than 40 people who support Shaw, questioned the fire commissioners about the suspensions and appealed for his reinstatement. While most of the crowd had hoped for a resolution to the problem, commissioners returned following an executive session after hearing a grievance filed by Starr Assistant Chief Gregg Campbell and stated that no action was taken.

The newspaper reports that earlier in the night Campbell opened the meeting by pleading with commissioners to reinstate the firefighters and move on to more important things.
