We told you about the security breach at Target that made national headlines. Now some of you are contacting us after getting emails with the target logo offering free credit monitoring.

Many of you want to know, are they real?

Leesa Simmons in Spartanburg was one of those viewers.

"I was leery, I was scared to click on that link, I didn't want to give them more information than they may have already had," she said.

That was her first impulse when she says she got an email with the Target logo offering a link to free credit monitoring.

"I knew of the Target scandal and I didn't want to click on anything without checking, so I checked with a few friends and nobody else had gotten the same email, so I sent it to you to see if you to see if you could find out if it was legitimate," said Simmons.

Consumer watchdogs like InfoSecurity have warned for years how "scammers use current events to steal money and personal information."

So we reached out to Target for answers. They confirmed the email is legitimate and so can you. They posted a copy online of the only emails that they sent on the issue. You can find them here and compare for yourself.

We also found out there were 2 breaches at Target.

The first involved the theft of credit and debit card numbers from 40 Million people who shopped in stores from Nov 27th through mid-December.

The second stole the information from 70 million shoppers that Target had on file, like names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.

Target told us there could be some overlap between the 2 groups, but the company doesn't know to what extent at this time. What it did tell us is that if you didn't shop in stores between Thanksgiving and Dec 15, your credit and debit cards were not exposed.

Simmons falls into both groups.

"It's scary to think what all they could get a hold of," said Simmons.

She signed up for the credit monitoring and also requested a new debit card.
