You think of crime fighting out on the streets, but Union County Sheriff David Taylor says it's also important to fight crime by crunching the numbers.

In 2013, the Sheriff's Office put about 2200 people behind bars - that's an increase of about 700 from 2012. It's almost double the number from 2009.

"When you lock up nearly 1,000 more people than you did the year before, that should ring a bell," explained Sheriff Taylor.

He points to repeat offenders and an increase in larcenies as a part of the problem. He says - you can almost track crime spikes with unemployment rates.

"More people working are less people out stealing," said Taylor.

Sheriff Taylor says, as the times have changed, so have the crimes. This past year, they've seen a lot of white collar crimes. It's the same way they now bust meth labs, instead of running down bootleggers.

"If they were still doing that today, then look at what the drug situation would be," Taylor explained.
